Smart Guide
Smart landscape lighting, explained.
What smart control actually adds to outdoor lighting — and what it doesn't.
"Smart" outdoor lighting isn't a gimmick — done right, it changes how you use the system. The value isn't in controlling lights from a phone for its own sake; it's in scheduling, scenes, and automation that make the lighting fit your life without you thinking about it. This guide covers what's real and useful, without making claims about specific brands or platforms we can't verify.
App-controlled outdoor lighting
App control lets you turn zones on and off, dim, and change scenes from a phone — at home or away. For a property with multiple zones, that's genuinely useful: you can turn the pool area off from inside without walking out, or check that everything's off from out of town. See our app-controlled lighting page for the details.
Scheduling
Scheduling is where most of the day-to-day value lives. Set the entry and pathway to come on at sunset and the landscape to fade off at bedtime, and the system just runs. Astronomical timers adjust automatically as sunset shifts through the year, so you're not reprogramming with the seasons.
Dimming
Dimmable fixtures let one set of hardware serve many moods. The same entertaining area can be bright for cooking and soft for relaxing. Dimming also reduces energy use and extends component life when you don't need full output.
Scenes
A scene is a saved combination of which fixtures are on, at what level, in what color. "Evening," "Entertaining," "Pool," and "All Off" are common examples. One tap sets the whole property to the right state instead of adjusting fixtures one at a time.
Automation
Beyond fixed schedules, automation ties lighting to conditions — sunset, motion, or other triggers. The point is to remove the manual step for routine patterns while keeping manual override for anything else.
Vacation schedules
When you travel, a vacation schedule can cycle lights on and off in a realistic pattern so the property looks occupied. It's a practical security feature that requires no extra fixtures — just the system you already have running a believable routine.
Event lighting
For gatherings, event lighting lets you push the system beyond its everyday look — brighter for a party, colored for a holiday, or a custom scene for a specific event. Because it's all the same hardware, you set it once and recall it whenever you need it.
Color-changing lighting
Color-changing (RGB and RGBW) fixtures add a color layer on top of warm white. Used with restraint, color can highlight a feature or mark a season; overused, it reads as a novelty. RGBW fixtures include a dedicated white channel so the everyday look stays a true, warm white. See our color-changing lighting page for how we approach it.
A note on brands and compatibility
Several control systems work well for outdoor lighting, and the right one depends on your property, budget, and the devices you already use. We don't make brand-specific compatibility claims here — we confirm what fits your actual setup during a consultation.
Where smart fits in the bigger plan
Smart control is a layer over a good lighting design, not a substitute for one. The fixtures, placement, and layering still come from the landscape lighting plan; smart control makes that plan adaptable. See the smart lighting hub for the full set of capabilities, and our smart landscape lighting service for how it's applied.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a specific brand or platform for smart lighting?
There are several control systems that work for outdoor lighting. Rather than recommend a single brand, we design around what fits your property, budget, and the devices you already use. We'll confirm compatibility with your specific setup during the consultation.
Can I control landscape lighting from my phone?
Yes. App-controlled systems let you turn zones on and off, dim, change scenes, and set schedules from a phone, often with the option to control away from home as well.
